Budapest At A Glance

T and I finally arrived in Budapest. It was an exhausted train trip after having long walking day in Munich. We left Munich at 10 pm a day before with the night train. When we arrived on the train, T just realized that she ordered the upper beds for both of us. While I am claustrophobic and afraid of heights. I almost decided to buy the other tickets for both of us, or even buy two seats if sleeper compartments were not available anymore. When we talked about the options, two other passengers came inside to join us. They’re Hungarian mother and daughter, and the mother spoke German. Thanks to T for her German. She explained the situation to that Hungarian lady. End of conversation, the Hungarian lady gave her bed to me. I could not thank her enough.

Our train left at 11 pm. We agreed to switch off the light and lock the compartment. It seems everybody was so tired and sleeping was the first thing we wanted to do. I closed my eyes and I could not remember how long after that I fell in the deep sleep. I slept almost as a baby, despite the uncomfortable bed I had under my body. It was my second time travel with the night train. First time, I did it in Morocco, from Tangier to Marrakesh. Compared to Moroccan sleeper train, this European sleeper train was less comfort. While in Morocco I had a bed soft bed (but not so comfy), the one I traveled to Budapest had a hard bed.

We arrived in Budapest in the next morning. Compared to Munich, everything was so different, particularly in technology and modernity. The train station looks really old compared to the one in Munich. We did not want to stress ourselves more by thinking about public transport to take us to the apartment where we would stay for the next three nights. Taxi was our choice. We just gave the address to the driver to take us there.

The location where we stayed in is called Belváros – Lipótváros, is really good for architecture and its atmosphere. It is 100 meters only from St. Stephens Basilica and the famous Chain Bridge is only within walking distance. Numerous restaurants, cafes and bars could be found around. We arrived before the check in time. However, the land lady allowed us to store our luggages and gave us the key of apartment. She told us that  she will prioritize our apartment to be cleaned. We did not have breakfast yet. Despite many restaurants around, I had no idea why we ended at Chinese restaurant for our brunch.

After having heavy breakfast, we decided to take a little bit walk. We did not have particular purpose for that day. So, what we did was just to walk around, waiting for 2 pm to return to the apartment. We did not walk that far, since we were literally tired. However, the stunning architecture that we saw in the neighborhood had stole my heart. Everywhere we went, we were amazed by beautiful architecture and tidy little street. We enjoyed ourselves to get lost from one street to another. The architecture is unique, with mix styles decorating the buildings, from baroque, renaissance, roman, gothic to art-nouveau. OK, it was less modern compared to big European cities I visited before. Budapest has character, history and is more affordable, particularly compared to West European cities.

St. Stephens Basilica. Only few steps from our apartment.

We returned to apartment at 1 pm. We knew that it was one hour earlier. But we prefer to wait at the terrace of our apartment. But, when we arrived, the landlord told us that we may enter the apartment. Since it was already cleaned. I finished the transaction with the owner.

“So, you girls are from Indonesia?”

“Yes. But I am living in DRC and T is living in Germany,” I explained him.

“I know your former president. Soekarno. I read a lot about him,” he told us.

After finishing the transaction, he gave us his phone number. He told us that we can call him or his wife anytime we need something to ask. They’re lovely couple.

Our apartment has the loft. Sitting room and kitchen is in the same room. Kitchen is fully equipped, so we would be able to prepare some tea or coffee, or even make our meals if we want. Bathroom is located next to the kitchen. We were so happy when we found washing machine at our apartment. The first thing we did was to unpack our clothes and put them in the machine. Our bedroom is located at the upper floor. Beside two twin beds, a wardrobe and big mirror were there. We slept right away after having a good shower which I considered as the best shower in the past three days.
